Yes, it is a deterrent.
On the same order as the summary executions carried out by traffic police in China for drivers who exceed the speed limits by a certain amount or who disobey the officers orders. They did break the law, after all

The branding with hot irons on the foreheads of all convicts of all crimes would also be a deterrent.

Mandatory blinding in one eye would certainly be a deterrent to cheating on tests in high schools.

So would mining the border to maim border jumpers.

They're all deterrents, and all of those deterrents are unworthy of a Christian country.

There is a BIG difference between mining the border and the examples you gave. None of the examples you gave, from speeding to cheating in school, are routes for islamic terrorist entry into the respective countries. Meanwhile, we know that our border regions are. Additionally, the societal impact of the illegal alien invasion is far, far greater than than that of speeding on roadways. BTW, I don't think they execute for speeding in China. Try again. Or show me some articles from a reputable source. Why should I take ANYTHING seriously someone says, YOU, who makes up "examples" to prove their "point?" That's DUmpster behavior. It won't get you far here.

Furthermore, we use landmines in other countries. Our own troops train with them regularly. We use landmines as deterrents already for other purposes, so it's apparently not "unworthy." If they were, we wouldn't have ammo dumps stocked full of them. Since landmines are clearly not "unworthy" of us, please make the case as to why they are unworthy of the role od protecting our perimiter? That's what we have landmines for, that's what their purpose, that's what they are used for. Protecting perimiters.

What is your solution? All I hear from your quarter are complaints about why any particular solution isn't perfect. Well guess what, none is. I have yet to hear a suggestion from you, however.... one that will prevent further illegal, unmonitored border crossings. Not one.

Don't give me the pablum that "you support the Presiden't plan," either. His plan is no plan. I worked many hours for his campaign for the entire year before his presidency. I'm glad he was re-elected, given the alternative. But unlike you, I haven't fooled myself that he takes the issue of border security seriously. His solution to bring more people over legally but not end the situation of non-enforcement of hiring of illegals and non enforcement of the border is a recipe for disaster.

We need to protect out borders NOW, and his big plan to cut the number of new border officers authorized by congress from 2000 to 200 is no solution, either. Next weekend, I am going on a javelina hunting trip. The tag I got is for a border area. I'll be making camp in the desert for 3 days. The funny thing is that the biggest danger to me will not be wild animals, it will be illegal aliens and their coyotes. I'm not worried about wild animals raiding my camp while I'm in the field as much as I am about illegal aliens doing so.
