Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

Not all who claim to be conservatives really are. Some are just trollish infiltrators.....

The power of the mainstream media was significantly reduced in 2004 and the power of FR and the Blogs became apparent to the world.
A large number of new members have started posting since Rathergate.
While pseudo conservatives might be here, the power of reason and truth might "backfire" on them and they'll end as good Freepers. That's happened to many a lurker.
Keep up the good work JR.

Ditto said: "But I say no to vigilantes and their cousins the Klan, the Arian Nations and the Skin Heads. They don't have the right to form their own Night Rider outfits and dispense justice as they see fit."

I would point out that the term "vigilante" can be misapplied much like the term "militia". Have you noticed how many armed, terrorist groups are now referred to as "militias" by the MSM? I think similarly that the MSM will refer to people who own property along the border as "vigilantes" if they take any steps whatever to reduce the flow of illegals through their property.

Once an appropriate label has been placed on a group, the propagandists can proceed to destroy them.

Oh relax, yarddog. Howlin is good people. I have had the honor and privilege to meet her on several occasions and have been a guest in her fine home. She is a classy lady, a very fine human being (one of the NICER people you'd EVER meet, by the way), and yeah......someone not afraid to speak her mind and pull out the straight razor when she thinks it's warranted.

I admire that.

I also want nothing to do with vigilantism so that rules out the so-called minuteman project. I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, I'll simply continue revoking the posting privileges of those who post from these sites or attempt to promote vigilantism on FR.

"It is a call to be vigilant -- to know that your government is on high alert, and to add your eyes and ears to our efforts to find and stop those who want to do us harm." - President George W. Bush, November 2001

It was President Bush himself who, after the 9/11 attacks, asked all Americans to be "vigilant" and aware and to watch for and report suspicious activity to the proper authority. This is what the Minuteman Project, from what I understand, plans to do. They're going to be vigilant, watch some areas around the border, and report suspicious activity. They're also going to make a political point about our lack of border security while they're doing it - a FReep, as it were. They're not hunting illegals, they don't plan to apprehend illegals, they're just doing what the President asked all of us to do in response to the 9/11 attacks and they're doing it where there's more suspicious activity than you can imagine.

"Wow...do you feel better now? We sure hope so. That was quite a rant! I quite enjoyed it!"

That's too bad for you. Big guys are going to throw you in a truck and force sensitivity training classes on you.

I am very opposed to open borders too and have never had any negative response to my "What is Bush thinking?" comments.

And I STILL wonder what the heck he thinks he's doing when he continually invites illegals to take "jobs Americans won't take"!

This is only lowering the wage base for all Americans in the lower wage categories.

When these immigrants reach up for the pricier goods and demand higher wages, there will be hell to pay!

Am I banned yet?

Jim wouldn't do that.

Thanks Jim once again for this site so we can vent about insane policy!

You da man!

If Jim Robinson was the type of guy depicted in this hit-piece, this thread would have never happened. But HE posted it.

Says a lot about the accuracy of the article....

They've been trying to infiltrate FR. It isn't working. The trolls masquerade as enlightened libs preaching racial tolerance and then disappear to watch FReepers argue. That's been the MO lately.

I've noticed that once they get the courage to actually SAY something (the trolls that is), they don't last long! They just can't hide who they are....and that sure makes it easier for us. :-)

It ain't mine, I put the attributions in it.

Firehat wrote most of it. I had it saved on my desktop for the proper time and place.

I thought since I have been a bit miffed with this poster, I would use it for his opus.

Then could you please enlighten us as to where you DO draw the line when it comes to racism? Since you claim bayourod is playign the race card, I think you ought to at least be honest and tell people where YOUR limits are.

Simple. When someone intentionally hurts in any way (through discrimination, exclusion, etc) another person primarily on the basis of that person's race.
