Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

Immigration reform is not amnesty.

And even if it were, I am much more concerned about stopping terrorists and criminals than in stopping the naughtiness of line-jumping.

I don't think waiting will do any good. Mexico has been poorly governed since independence. I don't know what the solution is, but as long as the Mexican ruling class can get away with ripping off its citizens there's no motivation to change a thing.

If we really reformed them --- that is get some control over them -- returned the people that the Mexican government doesn't want in Mexico to Mexico it will start the reforms rolling.

I'm not as pessimistic about it as you are --- for one Mexico is a very very wealthy country --- but most of the vast wealth is cut off from the majority of it's citizens. Most cannot even make ends meet --- but yet they were doing that a generation ago. Mexican farmers used to be self-sufficient substinence farmers not long ago--- now they are landless peasants who have seen their irrigation waters cut off and their farms dry up. They were kept down by their own government which would not allow them to have tractors --- then it turns around and says they must compete with American farmers who do have tractors --- and they cannot compete so are forced to give up farming. Incredible that the people who developed corn now must import it.

The presidents proposal will not stop or even deter terrorists. It' a very simple fact.

Maybe you ought to move along, since this site is such a den of iniquity, and you apparently have no respect for the fairness or integrity or character of the owner.

I actually see no good reason that Mexico cannot be a neighbor more like Canada --- and I see no reason it's majority cannot become middle class --- maybe what would be to us "lower middle class" but they can do far better in their own country than they can with the present form of government. Mexico competes with Great Britain in number of billionaires --- the wealth is certainly there.

Exactly. That is why those who claim the solution to illegal immigration is to effect revolutionary change in Mexico is absurd.

It's a simple fact that the President's current policies on the border are based upon one criteria: Stopping terrorism.

That's no more absurd then the president rewarding illegal aliens with worker visas. BTW, I’ll move a long when I ready

For example, had we not murdered thirty million babies since 1970, perhaps we wouldn't need ten million illegal aliens in the country covering the Social Security payments of the generation who murdered those babies.

Very good point. One I've made in conversations on the subject. However, that aside, we still probably have plenty of people to do what needs to be done. In addition, it is my contention that all this illegal immigration is not a net plus for our country.

Your Hillary statement was nonsequitur.

I haven't called the politicians traitors in any of my posts, so I have no idea where you came up with that one.
