Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

kissing Laura in church and patting her on the bottom.

those are things I like and admire and agree with about our President amongst many others sans this lighthearted issue....patting one's wife's bottom coming out of church is a good thing.

I'm not sure I agree that the Minuteman Project is vigilantism. There is support for them at the national, state, and local level from folks in elected office and law enforcement.

Is there no discussion allowed about this subject at all or just no discussion that is ugly? I'd understand the latter, but feel the former would be unfortunate.

And to make it fair --- those who have committed felony document fraud and broke the laws to be here should not be given any preference over those who are obeying our laws. All applicants to the guest worker plan should apply from within their own country. Lawbreakers should not be moved to the front of the line while lawabiders are turned away. In fact those who committed felony document fraud crimes should not be eligible at all for any kind of legal immigration or guest worker plan.

Even I know the term, "randy." I don't think it's an inside joke. I'll laugh along, though, lol.

I think we should deport illegals, in as much as it is feasible. Actually, I thought after 9/11 that we should have sent everyone back home, even on legal visas, and made them go through stronger security measures to get back in.

I believe the vast majority of freepers wanter stricter immigration laws, and tighter borders, and believe (even those of us who agree with most of the President's policies) that the administration policy on immigration is lax at best, and dangerous at worst.

Keep in mind that I am routinely attacked as a "Bushbot".......a 'blind follower' who mindlessly agrees with everything that the President says.....

The 'inside'-ness of the joke was about the specific thread I referred to above.

I assume that everyone knows what the word itself means.

This article was ridiculous, wardaddy. The leftist writing it was seriously disturbed that the President would do something so 'randy' in church.

It was really funny, IMO. The left is SO pathetic, and doesn't have a clue that they are.....

Another good question --- how many of us need guest workers? I don't. I also don't need to pay for the education and free health care of someone else's.

If someone can't afford to get their cheap yard-boy a health insurance plan --- or pay him wages high enough so he can pay his family's health care costs ---- then why the taxpayers have to provide subsidized labor for them?

An awful lot of the "work" being done by illegals isn't going to be a loss to anyone at all if it doesn't get done. If my neighbor's leaves don't get raked --- so what? Ir your neighbor's beds don't get made and he has to do his own dishes --- big deal. If someone doesn't have a cheap but uninsured live-in nanny and has to take their kids to a day care --- no big loss.

"To make it fair"...translates into "to maintain the status quo and do nothing."

Get yourself elected President FITZ, then YOU can dictate policy.

There has never been any indication from Bush, his cabinet, or anyomne in hius administration that this plan would only apply to one group...

And what other foreign government is demanding and ramming through this "guest worker" program? And what leader besides Vicente Fox would go into a rage if Bush suddenly called off the plans for a "guest worker" plan? Imagine Fox's livid reaction if Bush were to announce that guest workers were going to be from any number of countries besides Mexico and that to make sure law breakers aren't given preference over law abiders that the guests would be applying from within their homelands? Don't tell me that the Mexican government isn't the one pushing this thing.

Every time the Democrats raise the minimum wage they drive young workers out of the market and usher in more illegals to undercut the the minimum wage and all the expensive benefits with cash payments.

A local contractor let go a tile setter and hired an illegal who underbid the American by a few pennies an hour. There are many terrible stories about our skilled labor in this area.

And we are now 70% Latino population.

Like Luis Gonzalez says, it's the sugar that brings in the ants, not the holes in the wall.

Those businesses are to the Republicans what the lawyers are to the Democrats, a source of corrupt donations. And the minimum wage is a Democrat issue to help them get and keep the power to graft the system, not a matter of injustice to them.

And if you think either those lawyers or those businessmen or those politicians are going to let go of their bag of gold without a lot of pressure, then think again.

Luckily, Dubya has one advantage now and you can see it in the spring in his step. He doesn't have to stand for re-election again. He is free to do the right thing.

So, everybody, don't just knee-jerk and scream at him. Work the problem. Think about real solutions. And let him know.

For me, if they raise the minimum wage, it should all go for health insurance some way or another.

Self employed domestic stuff is a very small fraction of it. I have no figures but this is based on what i see regionally.

In the south, it is mostly all farm labor, civil construction and forestry. In other areas it is much the same with some areas having more restaurants, gardening and landscape work.

Much of the janitorial stuff in contractors and I suppose I should not forget the migrant tomato pickers , fruit pickers and others.

I would say, the majority is in agriculture.

Miss them?

In Arkansas, it would be devastating to our only industry, which is trees, chickens and rice, cotton and soy.

We don't have a dictator in the USA. No one should dictate policy. Here we have government of the people, by the people, for the people.
