Dubya's ignoring this issue is going to bite us in the @ss in 2008 in more ways than one.
No doubt about about it. If the economy takes even a minimal backslide, the additional 20,000,000 "Guests" will drastically increase the rate, increase social programs and give slimelady enough ammunition to win over a lot of pubbies. Scarey, isn't it?

jveritas...... In the 1950's the US government launched "Operation Wetback" to deport over one million illegal immigrants from Mexico and they failed miserably because it created a huge backlash

It surly wasn't any political *backlash* against President Eisenhower who won a landslide election in 1952 with some 442 electoral votes & was reelected in 1956 by even a larger margin.....with 457 electoral votes.
Most US *voters* I've known from those times thought "Operation Wetback" was a huge success.
Just as most US *voters* today agree we need a more *politically correct*.....OPERATION DEPORT. (to cover ALL illegals)
