President Bush cannot push his guest-worker program for illegal immigrants and new foreign workers and still win reforms to Social Security or the tax code, congressional opponents said yesterday.
"There are a lot of ambitious plans, a lot of necessary reforms that need to take place, but this rush toward amnesty-light should not be one of the priorities," said Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, who called himself a friend and political ally of the president, but said Mr. Bush's immigration proposal would hurt his broader legislative agenda.

President Bush has remained constant on his proposal for a guest worker program. He introduced legislation before 9/11 and had to put it on the back burner.
He spoke of it often during the campaign including the third debate.
For you to claim that you worked hard for President Bush and didn't know his position on a guest worker program doesn't sound plausible.

I just heard on Dobbs that Duncan Hunter took a "group" of other congressmen on a tour of the border. They're getting serious about this. There's a new poll up as well.

"We", meaning the vast majority of Americans seem to be doing very well. The economy is great, standard of living up, unemployment down, crime down, home ownership at an all time high, savings up, church attendance up, more leisure time.......
But regardless of how great this country is doing there will always be a few people who aren't participating. There's nothing that can be done about them. They strive on self pity.
No, he's a mature adult who has performed extremely well on both foreign and domestic fronts through very difficult times and against a united Democrat/media opposition.
He's not going to let a few little demagogue House members and xenophobes prevent him from doing what's necessary to keep this country prosperous.

Instead of shooting down the Bush plan, why don't you promote the plan/bill that you favor?
For the Dems it is to import voters. For Bush, it is to heed the business interests who benefit from cheap labor. Cheap labor is a powerful interest. We fought a war over it. From Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address:
One-eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war, while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.
If cheap labor in the form of slaves is worth waging a war over, the peculiar interest of cheap labor from illegals will too have significant political influence. It is manifest in the inexplicable actions of the Bush Administration.
The peculiar interest dares not unfurl its banner proclaiming "CHEAP LABOR". Instead it hides its motivations, obfuscates, hurls accusations against those that oppose it, rhapsodizes about diversity and our immigration heritage, etc.
Just read the Wall Street Journal op ed pieces, and you'll see what illegal proponents are reduced to advocating.
We used to be a city that had many good businesses and companies, and people here were employed. Now we have very few businesses, and those few pay low salaries with little benefits. Most of our good work has been out sourced to China and India.
Every street is filled with illegal immigrants who only know enough to get them to the court house and plugged into the social services there - at tax payer expense, of course. Because of having to support this massive influx of illegals, our city's elderly are living on less. The food banks are being depleted, and the quality of life sucks.
Those elderly who are lucky enough to own homes are taxed heavily to build new schools for the Mexican children. Many are forced to sell or lose their homes when the tax man comes calling.
Don't tell me life in the US is good. It is Hell for most of us who are besieged with low paying jobs and illegal immigrants sucking the life out of our city. I will say again that George Bush's love of open borders and slave labor jobs for his business cronies will eventually bring this country down. If you are too blind to look around you and see things as they are, I can't help it.
Which in essence is saying that the volume of illegals will not increase or decrease but remain the same.

Let's follow the logic. Immigrant X is here illegally. He deserves to be arrested and removed from teh country because he broke our sovereign border laws.
Bush comes along and offers X a chance to apply for a legitimate program, thereby validating his presence here.
He gets an opportunity instead of deportation.
