CAUTION! The following may seem to be heartless...

As well as sophomoric.

If the real reason for helping our fellow man is not enough for you:

"And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, [even so] minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." -- 1 Peter 4:8-10.

Then the pragmatic reason should suffice. World economies are interconnected. We help to help ourselves:

"Society is joint action and cooperation in which each participant sees the other partner's success as a means for the attainment of his own." -- Ludwig von Mises.

Works for me, Bones (may I call you 'Bones?' I have been wanting to call a doctor 'Bones' since I was a young kid watching Star Trek).

"We help to help ourselves!" -- says every knave in history.

Yes a whole lot of extra special folks and poobahs bordering the Ocean Indian are saying, thinking and doing exactly that.

And more rising and racing towards and a'scheming for the horns of plenty so as to grab them fulsome as we speak, for whatever wealth is too quickly out in the general direction of tragedy.

Never underestimate the cunning and energy of greedy curs in the circumstance of such tradegy. If we act like drunks on payday buying drinks all round, we make everyone in town the worse fo it. The curs are the first to the bar to get drunk with us. And once drunk and hungover they'll be quite liberal with their cussedness and meaness. No widow or orphan will be safe.

Your is a most apt summary.

Labeling a poster as sophomoric isn't helpful.

But note that under the present interpretation of the separation of church and state doctrine, this is not applicable.  Further, the above referenced item applies to individual action, not governmental action.  If individuals choose to act in accordance with the above doctrine they may do so.  Please note that it does not mandate taking from others and donating the proceeds to perceived victims.

Then the pragmatic reason should suffice. World economies are interconnected. We help to help ourselves:

"Society is joint action and cooperation in which each participant sees the other partner's success as a means for the attainment of his own." -- Ludwig von Mises.

So by your interpretation, the government should send me $10,000,000.  That would certainly help me, and hence would help everyone else attain their own success. LOL!
