I nearly married a fine Catholic girl, I would have never called (or even considered) calling her or her family "mackeral-snappers". They would have found that highly derogatory. Coming from a heathen it would have been. But I grew up in the 'Fish on Friday' days, and referring to ourselves as 'mackeral snappers' was something we did to annoy the Nuns.
