Having grown up in the Galveston Bay area during WWII, I remember stories about possible sightings of German submarines. My father worked in a refinery in Texas City, and IIRC the refinery kept its lights out or shrouded at night to avoid possible attacks from submarines. The refinery may have also had people serving on shore watch patrols.

I found the following news story involving a German submarine and Robert E Lee (German sub).

Oh, I'm not doubting that there were u-boats active in the Gulf off of Galveston. That's clear. What I'm disputing is Watie's story about privateers on a yacht commissioned by the State of Texas capturing one and putting in on display in a Galveston park, which is such a remarkable story that it's hard to believe you can't find a single thing about it anywhere. I can tell you all about how the U505, on display in Chicago, was captured off of Africa. That's well documented. But the article you posted says right in the second paragraph, "The only German submarine lost in the Gulf of Mexico during World War II, the U-boat was believed for decades to have been destroyed on Aug. 1, 1942, by a depth charge dropped from a Coast Guard torpedo plane."
