"Zot" is the sound made by a explosively powerful electrical discharge. Think of Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, casting lightning down and smiting uppity mortals.

In the early days of the internet, (You know, BEFORE Al Gore was VP.) there was the USENET, a "bulletin board" in some ways similar to FR, only it had thousands of treads of all different types, for all different groups of internet users. (The internet was a much smaller, tighet community back then, mostly composed of college nerds and tech professionals.) Early running jokes eventually became computer terms, such as the "Monty Python SPAM song," which gave us the term, "Spam."

One comic thread which was among the most popular in the world was the USENET oracle. People would grovel, and then submit a question to the gods, who would then issue a satirical answer. If the question angered the gods, or did not include sufficent grovelling, or made a reference to a wood chuck*, the "supplicant" would be destroyed by a ZOT cast dwon from the Heavens.

[*The USENET oracle "gods" were actually supposedly an all-knowing, all-powerful and all-logical computer. Occasionally, people would try to ask thoroughly illogical questions to yield an illogical answer. One such question was "How much would would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck would chuck wood?" Thus, any reference to wood chucks were perceived as an attempt to humilate the oracle.]
