What's a lie?
lie (lì) noun
1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.
2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.
"The middle thing" was practice, as in to practice to deceive.
I'm out of practice, since I haven't been worried about what somebody might think for several years.
