Bush Administration Expresses Confidence in Annan

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Bush administration has confidence in U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and is not calling for his resignation, U.S. Ambassador John Danforth said on Thursday.

Several Republican congressmen have called for Annan's resignation, accusing him of presiding over corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program for Iraq, administered by the United Nations but supervised by the 15-nation Security Council.

But Danforth said he was representing the opinion of the White House and the State Department in supporting Annan.

"We are expressing confidence in the secretary-general and his continuing in office," Danforth told reporters.

"No one to my knowledge has cast doubt on the personal integrity of the secretary-general. No one," Danforth said. "We have worked well with the secretary general. We anticipate working with him in the future."

The expression of confidence often comes shortly before the resignation.

Well, you have to be "100% behind" somebody in order to stab them in the back...

This is one of the times I disagree with the 'white house'.

No,pet...it is YOU,who are clueless and ill informed;not to mention a political naif who neither knows nor understand anything at all.

How much,in today's dollars, did it cost us to set up Germany and Japan after WW II? How many of our men died in WW II? How long did it take for us to put down the WOLF PACK?

And BTW...your crystal ball is broken. You have less than no idea what I think or "feel deep down". Projection is an easily treated mental disease...get help.

Are you older than 16? If so,are you younger than 30? And you joined FR because? LOL

so this endeavor is supposed to change the fact that there is an ongoing conflict between islam and everyone else? i see this war and ww2 as very different.

im not sure if im in the right forum. im a conservative. i dont like to see my tax dollars being spent one muslims in the hopes that democracy will save the world. im not interested in taking on the burden of saving the world and other noble efforts. lets leave that to the corrupt losers at the UN.

How many of our men died in WW II?

How many died in the occupation of Germany after major combat ended?

I had thought 5hat Bush would be different during term two. I guess not. Sadly, he still believes he should not treat the left as foes to be vanquished, but rather win over or appease.

Disappointing.

also, i think my opinion is shared by the majority of conservatives. there are the people like yourself who are threatened by any questioning of the republican leadership that you start personal attacks when someone going against what you believe. i have always been a supporter of the republican party but im a conservative not a republican. if bush doesnt act like a conservative then i have a problem.

You aren't on the right forum for you and no,you aren't a Conservative either...you're a throwback to the KNOW-NOTHINGS.

Neither do you understand anything about what we're doing in Iraq and I assume that you don't "get" what we're doing in Afghanistan either. You most assuredly don't know anything about WW II either,so of course you are incapable of seeing any comparisons or debating the facts.

Come on,confess...you really are a troll and very young.

He is not yet into his second term and you are already bashing him. Disapppointing.

and you use germany as if we are supposed to care about it. am i supposed to say "well we spent billions and lost thousands so germany can be such a great ally to us today and so we should do the same for the muslims"? i dont care if germany is in good condition or if we didnt help build them up and they were all starving. its not our responsibility. they will have to find their own way to be a decent nation.

Captain, look at it this way my friend...

Think of America as trying to win the peace in the Arab world so that WE won't get attacked by them again.

Don't think of it as "tax dollars being spent on muslims."

And I would also add that democracy and freedom are the greatest hopes for this world. We must try to spread these ideals, because if we do not, then we will see the evils of communism, fasicism, and terror reach our shores again. And that is something that I do not plan to see happen!

Kofi is hanging by a thread. He's looking down, sees a bottomless, irrelevant, Jimmy Carter-like existence (or worse), and he's panicking.

Uncle Sam strides up. Let's listen!
US: "Well, well, well, Kofi," says he.
KA: "Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaave my *sssssss!!!!!!"
US: "Why should I do that, Kofi?"
KA: "I'm Kofi Annan, Secretrary General of the United Nations!
US: "Ummmm hmmm. So?"
KA: "I pull strings for Bill Clinton and his gang!"
US: "Bye, Kofi."
KA: "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiit! I beg you!!! I'll behave, I promise...I'll lay off...I'll quit my pious Kyoto talk!"
US: "Bye, Kofi."
KA: "I beeeeeeeeeegggggggg you!!!! Don't leave me twisting (weeps) in da wind!"
US: "Kofi. You look like a beggar."
KA: "Pleeeeeeease! I'll quit telling you how to run your army!"
US: "I'm listening."
KA: "I'll stay out of your way! I'll quit taking oil money!"
US: (reaching for Kofi's trembling, sweaty, hand) "You'd better behave yourself, you spineless, talentless, shakedown artist. If you don't, I'll cut you off at the knees and send you to Somalia."
KA: "Oh, thank you!! Thank you!!!"
US: "Yeah, whatever. Go put on some clean clothes, creep."

The Bush administration has confidence in U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan...

Well, what could we expect?

Here's the administration that most of us worked overtime to get elected. They like Kofi...and they retained Mineta!

We're getting paid back for our efforts.

We didn't change Germany so that they would be a "great ally." We changed Germany because it was one of the great forces of evil in the world. And that evil was going to eventually reach America! Actually evil did reach America at Pearl Harbor. And it reached our shores again on Sept 11th. Now, we must destroy those who are spreading their evil, or be hit again and again and again!
