You'll not find me making the case that the ACW was "only about ending slavery." The case I make is that secession was primarily driven by the southern desire to propogate and expand slavery.

That isn't any more true than the other line.

As nc's post shows, the Southerners thought they were pretty much out of real estate in the Southwest. New Mexico as far west as the Sangres and the Sandia Mountains is pretty much an extension of west Texas, but that's about where agriculture stops.
