How about reparations for the severe and irreparable damage that the 13th and 19th amendments how caused to the Constitution and this country ?

Furthermore, it puts forth an image of Reconstruction as one in which freed blacks, the occupying Union army, Southern "scalawags" and Northern "carpetbaggers" inflict great harm on the defeated South,

No less a source than Booker T. Washington condemned radical reconstruction for reasons not unlike those. He observed that the reconstruction policies of the north were often instituted out of vengeance and often put men of very poor moral character (i.e. the carpetbaggers who moved down south to take advantage of political opportunities and profit) into office. He also noted that it created unnecessary animosity between blacks and whites in the south.

But, racial issues aside, I've always found the story to be too contrived: Seriously, would any woman, let alone Scarlett, ever choose Leslie Howard's Ashley Wilkes over Gable's Rhett Butler? And key characters such as Olivia de Havilland's sweet Melanie Hamilton are simply unbelievable.

I have always wondered why Scarlett could walk away from a real man like Rhett to a girlie-man like Ashley.

I read the book this summer and can unequivocably say it is the best piece of trash I have ever read. Shows the southern ruling class to be either outright idiots or incapable of connecting with modern times (Ashley.)

Maudlin, silly and trivial and a complete lie historically but still fun to read. There are some here who still use its absurd arguments trying to justify the Slaverocracy and its insanity.

Some people will use any vehicle to cause division and to use GWTW is a real stretch. North-South-black-white.

The movie is one of my all time favorites. To me it's about a very young woman learning to cope with unbelievable reversals in her life, a survivor growing up to finally realize who she really loves only to lose him.

I think the movie was an epic work for its time and deserves the place it has earned. The late Ms. Mitchell still deserves accolades for her novel.

Or as William L. Patterson of the Chicago Defender succinctly wrote: "('Gone With the Wind' is a) weapon of terror against black America."

I fail to see how such a maudlin movie could be any sort of weapon at all, against anyone.

"Considering its financial success and critical acclaim, "Gone With the Wind" may be the most famous movie ever made. It's also a lie."

No, sweetie, it's called 'fictional literature.' Look up the word 'fictional' in the dictionary.

The ultimate chick-flick. I hated it and felt the same way I did about that God awful "Titanic" movie. I couldn't wait for that damn boat to sink with all hands and GWTW made me wish Sherman had ICBMs.

Doesn't matter *what* the Big Bugs in the Liberal-Socialist circles have to say about GWTW.

I bought me a beautiful collector's copy on DVD recently; and, I might add before these types can tamper with the content.

So from me to them, then.

...pound sand.

We'll have a better country when more people openly reject the idea of certain "protected from offense" groups that demand "walking on eggs" and prior restraint, thereby preventing the truthful skewering of the nastiest of them. A play called "The Mfume Done Gone Kweisi" could be done at that wonderful time.

GWTW is my favorite book and movie of all time, and no liberal can change that. Not no way-Not no how!!

It's not my favorite because of the way it portrays slavery, but for the love story.

"shouldn't be judged by today's political and moral standards"

These liberal A$$ kissing Jessie Jackson types have the Gaul to reference todays moral standards as compared to 70 years ago is a laugh.

They need to get over it. This was a movie made in the late 30's (39) that more closely shows conditions in the 1860's than people born today would even believe... I see more bigotry now among the liberal elite Northerners than in most Southerners... and GWTW is one of my all time favorite movies!!!!

Furthermore, it puts forth an image of Reconstruction as one in which freed blacks, the occupying Union army, Southern "scalawags" and Northern "carpetbaggers" inflict great harm on the defeated South, which is saved - along with the honor of Southern womanhood - by the bravery of KKK-like vigilantes.

Indeed, the KKK did form to drive out the northern carpetbaggers. They, at this point, were actually on the side of good and were not involved in anything race related. They disbanded and subsiquently, another group of people took up a new racisit cause and an old KKK name and became the KKK that we know today.
