I know about the Maryland legislature and the September arrest of those trying to get Maryland to join the rebellion, but 4CJ had been talking about mass arrests of legislators and newspaper editors prior to Congress convening on July 4. I hadn't heard of those and was asking for details.

IIRC the first wave of arrests happened in Baltimore not long after the Pratt Street Massacre and the arrival of Butler on the scene. I don't remember who or how many were arrested, but I do know there were some because I remember seeing a display on it at the museum they have now inside one of the old train depots.

NOBODY living today knows how many UNLAWFUL arrests there were during & after the B'more Riots, as NO RECORDS were evidently kept of the "detentions".

the best that can be said of the number is to quote a LT of PA infantry. he said that the number "detained" was "legion".

btw, NOTE: to any SCV camps/civil war roundtables/school groups, the curator of the Baltimore Civil War Museum puts on a REALLY GREAT speech/seminar on the period and events immediately before/during/after the Baltimore Riots. (as a person who has spent a LOT of time reading documents of the period, i was FACINATED to find out how complex/misunderstood the B'more Riots were. his speech is an EYEOPENER!) also, the BCWM has NO exhibits about anything else about the WBTS. do NOT expect an overall view of the war/post war period.

I'm not aware of any 'wave of arrests' following the Baltimore riots. Some were arrested in response to plots to burn the railroad bridges leading into town, one of whom was the infamous John Merryman, but I'm not familiar with any arrests of legislators or newpaper editors following the riot.
