KEYES PLANNING TO RUN! (Accepts GOP IL Senate Bid)
Chicago Sun Times ^ | 8/05/4 | Scott Fornek

Posted on 08/05/2004 7:50:40 PM PDT by gopwinsin04

Let the debates begin.

Former Presidential hopeful Dr. Alan Keyes has told Illinois Republicans that he would accept their request to take on Democrat Barack Obama in the US Senate race.

Members of the Republican State Central Committee insisted that the former radio and television commentator make the promise to run before they would give him the nod Wednesday night, sources told the Chicago Sun Times on Thursday.

The Republicans were leery of voting to give Keyes the nomination without some guarantees.

So he went back into the room and bascially said, 'If you offer, than I will accept.'

Another GOP source said that Keyes had agreed to accept the nomination but told the committee that he wanted to wait until he could publicly announce it at a 'campaign style' rally on Sunday.

'He told them that he would do it,' the source said. 'he just wanted to take a few days to put things together and make his announcement.'

I haven't seen a single lie.

The lie is this continuing taunt that those who believe Keyes is at a disadvantage and cannot win are "cheerleading" for Obama. (There are no people here who could legitimately and sincerely be characterized as Obama supporters, that I have seen.) I repeatedly asked for an example of such behavior last night, and was mocked by the individual pushing that nonsense. Undaunted, he/she continued pushing it, and continues pushing it this evening.

I'm not asking you to comment further - I'm just clarifying, since you didn't know what I was referring to.

There is no likely scenario that would have me cast a vote for a Democrat, but that does not mean that I will not be vocal about Party issues; it's my Party, and places like FR have become the public square.

The Illinois GOP asked him to run, and there's nothing wrong with that...as long as the Illinois GOP either delivers the win, or accepts responsibility for the loss, and its consequences on Dr. Keyes's political viability. If you truly support Alan Keyes, then you need to understand that he must win in Illinois, in order to remain politically viable anywhere beyond it.

I don't lie, and I don't race bait. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Frankly, I don't think you do, either.

...Keyes won't win,is what I said...

Okay. You've made your point, on that.

Now, thinking about your experience in Illinois, what suggestions have you, for Dr Keyes' campaign?

Illinois is still in America's heartland.
And "Alan Keyes" is an American name.
Furthermore, Keyes is a national populist, which will play better in Illinois than neocon global corporatism.

That's utter codswallop and balderdash. I am not here "every waking moment". LOL

And you'll have to take my word on my working to help get the president re-elected,because there is no way to prove it to you.

The President wants Dr Keyes in the Senate, my dear. Any ideas, on how his wish can be realised?

I think it's Keyes' conservatism that bothers some people more than his race--they'll happily argue he's not conservative, or "the wrong kind of conservative". Which is not to say the GOP is racism-free; but neither are the Dems.

No, see, it's a game. Those who negatively attack Bush are accused of helping Kerry, of assisting his win, which is true. Therefore, it is only fair to apply that to Keyes vs. Obama.

There's hardly a soul on this forum who wants to lose the seat in Illinois to a Dem. That's why it's important that we all unite around the IL GOP nominee, and not do anything that helps his defeat. Constantly saying "Bush can’t win, Bush is going to lose," helps Kerry. Same for saying Keyes cannot defeat Obama. Why make the comment at all? Let's just work hard, and see what happens.

Good to be on the same side on this one, Willie.

Thanks. I'm just tickled that there's finally SOMEBODY I can cheer for this election cycle, even if I can't actually vote for him because I'm out of state.

Straw man argument. Not a lie. These Keyes bashers need to get over the fact that he's been selected, get on board, or go to DU. An honest reading of their posts indicates they seem to WANT Keyes to lose. Thus they are termed Obama's cheerleaders.

Nope. No way. That sentence is illogical, Luis, and I've never seen you show concern for Dr Keyes' career.

The most important thing, is to get involved in the process. If you want to change things you have to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. That's what Dr Keyes is doing. Matter of fact, he deserves even greater admiration, for taking on the Dems' rising star, at short notice, right in the latter's own heartland.

Ah, okay.

I'll give you that one.

It is technically untrue that any of the Keyes detractors I have seen have openly supported Obama.

But they sure are carrying his water.

Which gives me a certain amount of sympathy for a seemingly young conservative who engages in a certain amount of hyperbole to point that out.

Mea Culpa.

By the way, the corn crop here in southern IL sure looks good! ;-)

You're not the one(s) I'm referring to when I speak of FReepers who regularly lie, taunt, and race-bait. But check out the "third party" and illegal immigration threads sometime--you'll see what I mean.

I think we both understand the point is hypocrisy; and in the interest of getting a good night's sleep, maybe we should leave it at that for now.

Have a good night.

That may well be true with you, but there is a way to prove that Alan Keyes does. He was one of the very earliest people to openly endorse the President's reelection in the press.

And I did it way back too. A long essay that was spread around the country a bit that explained why I think that GW's reelection is critical for the country's safety and security.

The proof is in the pudding.

What can someone who lives outside of Illinois (or outside of the USA!) do, to help the Keyes campaign?

Besides financial contributions?
I suppose the best we can do from out of state is to follow the campaign closely and express our support whereever we can via the Internet. Of course, any national or international media attention the race may get will also trickle back down to Illinois and increase voter awareness.
