Like keeping up a good front for the children, or being deliberately cheerful after the raucous party, the game we play sometimes seems to lure in others to apparent cheerfulness.

Freud compared the subconscious to a riding horse, and admitted ruefully, that sometimes you had to "lead" it where it wanted to go.
