I don't care how smart the first robots will be. Their job is only to build more robots and energy-conversion ("solar cell") devices for the orbits of Mercury and Venus, as well as habitations for the colonists and mine-workers.

Beyond that, they could well become smart enough to be the new space explorers looking for habitable worlds outside the Solar System, if we wish.

Eventually, the future will include humans working side by side with robots, for the benefit of the humans, of course. (I refer you to my short story, at the AIport, posted on this thread somewhere...)
