I traveled across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel many years ago.
While we human commuters were moving along the vehicular lanes, seagulls in endless numbers were riding the pressure wave that arched up over the viaduct. Like bored avian commuters heading to work, they stretched their wings out just inches away on the other side of the guardrail.
I noticed something then that I never had before.
Each of them had an individual, recognizable "face" consisting of little distinctive markings on their beaks and around their eyes. A multitude of individuals.
Just like the human lane.
I look at any warm-blooded animal and I see a person.
not a human being (I am not one of those damned bunny-huggers), but a form of person nonetheless... all individual.
Dang. I'm about a mile from the southern terminus of that right now. And no opportunity to see more... rather amazing from the air.
