exactly why there are those of us (stainlessbanner, stand watie, wardaddy, and a number of others) who are trying to bring the truth to light here. The perception that you mention is the result of people not being fully educated on the matter. We could talk about the Union Slave States as we have here in this thread. We could talk about the fact that slaves were sold under the traditional American flag. We could also mention the fact that the Ku Klux Klan marched under the American flag.... and perhaps still does.
Unfortunately, it's far too easy to just label the flag and those whose ancestors fought under it as racist. It would take some effort to study the actual history and sort through the facts. That's the challenge.... and that's why we are here debating this issue week after week.
