A classic example of this sort of thing is what Hitler did with the ancient lore of the German Volk, all shined up and made vivid to the imagination by Wagner a few decades earlier. The values of the ancient traditions were totally submerged in Hitler's brilliantly successful attempt to make German "folk culture" come alive in the German collective conciousness...with the result that truly horrific things could occur in one of the great Christian nations of Europe.
