I thought the opposite - maybe the pilot got a tip a batch of al-Qaeda nutcases were scouting the flight...

Yes, the comments were out of place and not wise.

The pilot should be told not to do it again and the matter left at that. If he has any brains he will realize on reflection that his moment of witness could be taken as you say. Some will clamor for punishment, dismissal, lawsuits, fines, imprisonment...
