I explained the safeguard, it is the Constitution. It only worked in the election to make sure that the candidate that deserved to win by the rules was in fact elected. That candidate then proceeded to igore the rest of the Constitution as most presidents have for the last 80 years.
Yes, we DO have to deal with the system we now have---which is the never-intended popular democracy we have been left with as a result of the shredding of the Constitution. As long as we can't count on representatives to respect the Constutition with our money, our laws, and our rights, we need to use popular democratic means to get them back, which sometimes entails sacrifice for the long-term picture.

That in itself may answer many things. Most people are afraid to sacrafice and face a legitimate cause or challenge. It is easier for most to let the status quo play things out and hope that the future is good to them, rather than trying to change the future for the good.
