I feel more sorry for you, whose feelings got so 'hurt' in a discussion about the shuttle, that you think the whole forum needs to stop and soothe you. Get a grip.
Jack? Jack Thompson, is that you?

Secondly--I may not be remembering correctly--there were no EVA suits on Columbia (no space suits) so EVA to check condition was not feasible.
My Master's is in Aerospace engineering and I will tell you that there simply was no way to repair the tiles in orbit. Period.
The shuttles are 22 years old, most of them. These are old machines. We now have evidence (from 40% of the fleet) that they have a service lifetime less than 30 missions (in all probability). They should have been replaced a decade ago.
I have personally revised my position on manned spaceflight--due to Columbia. I now believe that there is no reason to send humans into space unless there is a task that a robot cannot do. I can think of only two: returning to the Moon or going to Mars. Notice that I do not mention the Station.
We are not going to the Moon or Mars in my lifetime, nor in yours...I'd wager.
And there SHOULD have been a tele-operated spherical gas tank with cold-gas thrusters and cameras so that the entire vehicle could be inspected from inside. Probably cost $10 million, chicken feed compared to $1.5-$2 billion to replace the shuttle (it won't be replaced).
