I am glad you mentioned AAA. IMHO any American driving period would be a fool for not signing up with these guys. Great Service when you are in a pinch. Whats the cost, like $40 a year? Do it FReepers!

Mine is $69 a year, and every associate is $29. Well worth the money, if you drive anywhere!

One of the best moves my family ever did for long trips was to stop by a National Park (or National Historical, National Battlefied, anything National) and buy one of their little blue "Passport to your National Parks" books. They're $10 at the most, and list every National headquaters in the U.S. You can get your book stamped at eery location you go to, and it becomes a real game to see how many stamps you can collect as you visit the different Parks. Our kids have seen scores and scores of Parks, battlefields (I like the Revolutinary War ones also) and places we'd never have heard of otherwise.

California has tons of Parks, and there are the Anasazi Indian cliff dweller ruins in Arizona (lots of 'em) the great Chaco Canyon National Park in New Mexico, for instance. It's really great and you see and learn so much. If you've got the time for a few side trips to these National Park-type places, do it, you won't regret it. Just get the little book, they're at every Park headquators, no matter how small.

Thank you. That is a great suggestion. The Anasazi area is something I've always wanted to see.

But make sure you keep your eyes on predicated weather conditions. Some of those places, particularly around Flagstaff (7000' elevation) may have snow, so plan ahead! :D

Eggs...I don't recommend driving this distance, unless you are very young and healthy, and haven't seen much of the country. If you must get to FL, flying is still the safest and can be done reasonably in terms of cost.

But here's my question....why come east when God deposited most of the astounding beauty in this nation on the western side?

I think your trip sounds great, however, I would NOT take route 66 or I-40 this time of year. There is a lot of snow along I-40 this time of year.

My sister came down from the Iowa last week and had a very icy time of it just NE of Flagstaff. I live between Flag and Phoenix so I know what I am talking about. If I were you, I would take I-10 rather than risk running into a snow storm in eastern AZ or western NM.

blams right in post 27.

I live in S.E. Mo. and our weather is unpredictable. So far this winter we have had, ice, snow, pouring rain,2 days of sunshine and gloomies galore. And winter has just begun.

And don't forget to visit Anna Maria Island west of Bradendon,Fl. I haven't been there in several years but it used to have a lovely beach with lots of sea shells. One of my favorite places of yore.

Have a great trip and use that laptop to keep us freepers updated on your progress! *sigh*

Cool list of Texas sites. Thanks for remembering mine (howdyyall.com). Don't forget to take your camera and never miss a chance to take a parallel, less traveled road. Roll down your windows and inhale, as long as your're not in Luling or Muleshoe, you'll inhale heaven, especially in the spring.

Heaven ... simply heaven
