Let me bore you with a sad story. She was an awfully skinny redheaded gal named Marilyn (her mother named her for Monroe) from Percé at the far eastern end of the Gaspé peninsula in Quebec, and a pretty good kid. Her husband was in a couple of car accidents, neither his fault, he wasn't driving. He just had pure dumb bad luck. He was quite some time recovering from the first one, but got over it. He didn't recover from the second in the early 80's: he was left nearly a quadriplegic, wheel-chair bound, and his speech was much like a very retarded person's although his mental functions were otherwise normal. Marilyn had to do everything for him (his mom came over while Marilyn was at work with us). When we'd go drinking from work, she used to wax quite hilarious about the 101 positions required to get her poor husband off!
Anyway, a couple of years before I left Montreal she got cancer (I forget which kind), and it looked terminal. The doctors said they would try an experimental treatment but not everything is paid for by Medicare in Canada (not experimental treatments, anyway), so the boss kindly ponied up $6,400 of the company's money. And it went into remission! For a while. Just before I left town in 1996 the cancer came back with a vengeance, and she died about 3 months after I got to Calgary. I suppose the husband's mom had to take him back in. Two very nice people, who deserved nothing resembling this. As opposed to some monstrous people who get named on this site quite often and seem to go merrily along...

Now that I think of it, I think Marilyn had lymph node or lymph gland cancer.

Very sad, indeed. Lymphoma can be very aggressive sometimes.

Very little I expect. Not much opportunity to party round here. No falling buffalo chip at midnight. No massive throngs. Just peace and quiet huddled around the kerosene stove in the tar paper shack in Montana as the coyotes howl.

The prairie actually begins about 60 miles northeast of here. We're more like "Little House in the Foothills of the Rockies, four miles upstream from where Lewis and Clark pooped in July, 1805."

This type of performance merely perpetuates the unfounded stereotypes that we in West Virginia are fighting so hard to overcome," Wise said in a letter to University of Virginia President John T. Casteen God those WV moonshinerhillbillies are a buncha whiners!
