I hear smokes are pretty expensive these days.

If we really want to send smokes, we should price them out. They're pretty reasonable here in Virginia. In fact they get bought here and sold under cover in NY. Our tax is the lowest or one of the lowest in the country at $0.025 per pack.

Yeah - that could be.... course that is only the state tax... there's the federal taxes... and I think the indian reservations pay federal but not state taxes too. G'nad may be able to get them tax-free at a PX.

Didn't Philip Morris or one of the big tobacco guys get in trouble for trying to send smokes during Desert Storm?

Where I used to work PM, RJReynolds and several others were big sponsors. They'd sponsor receptions and just lay hundreds of packs out on the table for folks to pick up.

Of course I liked the division of PM that carried the Swiss chocolates...

(and then there was Miller Beer....)

Are they something that can be sent, for sure? I know when I was stationed overseas (in Germany), we weren't supposed to have tobacco products mailed to us. Don't remember the reasons. Coffee, either, for some reason! Maybe not true anymore, though...and I didn't see that thread.

Heh....Well, I am re-thinking whether the PX would even be selling stuff totally tax-free, I seem to recall now that when Ramius was in the Coast Guard, they had to pay taxes on stuff they bought at the ship's store until they were at sea.

Ramius, we are thinking of sending some smokes in the gift boxes... wondering if someone with access to a PX would be able to get them cheaper.

Here's the thread.

Frodo looks a little put-out... maybe he's thinking he needs a new agent.

Apparently you can tell by putting in the zip code here. I tried it with my old zip code, and sure enough, it says "Cigarettes and other tobacco products are prohibited." Also "Coffee is prohibited". So I wouldn't get too worked up over this until we know for sure they're allowed...I'm betting they aren't.

As I recall, there's still tax in the PX but the price is still far lower. Yes, then when the ship was underway the "sea store" would sell them completely tax free. Back in 1989, a carton of Marlboros in the sea store was $4.50. I think the going retail at the time was about $20.

I'm sure some smokes would be appreciated.

Unfortunately sometimes I can't get the stuff back out.
