Unless they were too tight across the chest. That raises the unfortunate and awkward question about why Gimli's chest was so big. Could it be that Gimli is a she? After all, Gimli herself said that dwarf genders were indistinguisable and emphasized that the notion that there are no femdwarves was false. Why would she say such a thing except to hint that Gimli is a she. ;)

But Gimli fell in love with Galadriel, therefore Gimli must be a male dwarf. Just barrel chested.

therefore Gimli must be a male dwarf. We just don't know enough about dwarves to say that for certain. Who knows what goes on in those dark caves...with the sexes being indistinguishable from one another....
