MONTESANO -- Bids exceeding $40 million for a house where the late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain lived as a boy were not serious, the sellers say.

Since the nondescript rust-colored house with white trim was offered on eBay the high offer from a serious bidder is $210,000 -- $10,000 over the minimum set by Ed and Jennifer McKee of Oregon City, Ore.

More than 50 bids had been received, the highest for more than $40 million, by the time the McKees began checking the bids' validity.
"It feels good to be a millionaire -- on paper, at least," Ed McKee said. "It's hard for us to take these huge bids seriously because there's a lot of pranksters out there."

The McKees bought the 2,313-square-foot home in this town 70 miles southwest of Seattle for $42,500 last month without knowing Cobain had lived there from age 11 to 15 with his father and stepmother. The seller was a bank that had foreclosed on the property.

An attorney for Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and their daughter said yesterday that the Cobain estate had not authorized the auction.
"The estate will not be authorizing any commercial use of Mr. Cobain's name or likeness at the property," attorney Paul Karl Lukacs said.

INS says forgery racket was largest in state history

LYNNWOOD -- The little operation housed in a Shoreline apartment unit did a bustling business.

But everything it churned out was illegal: fake state drivers' licenses, forged birth certificates and bogus green cards.

Yesterday, the Lynnwood Police Department and Immigration and Naturalization Service called it the largest INS document forgery racket in state history.

And the bust this week has drawn interest not only for its volume, but also because the fakes looked so real.

"They're very passable if you don't look closer, and we haven't seen documents this high-quality in a while," said Garrison Courtney, an INS spokesman.

Courtney said investigators believe the small group involved in the forgery operation has distributed more than 800 fake documents. Buyers use the faked paperwork to line up legal jobs or apply for identification in other states.

Investigators made two arrests this week. Both men are Mexican nationals. Authorities estimate that forged Social Security cards and fake INS paperwork already sold by the men have a street value of about $240,000.

Business mainly was drummed up by word of mouth, and customers tended to be Mexican nationals living in Western Washington, officials said.

Courtney said a fake immigration document could cost anywhere from $50 to $100.
