If Angela isn't upset about her child being cared for by at least one drug addict (Richard) and maybe two (if she's addicted to Soma), then she is capable of denying any danger which a more competent mother might see in having her child living there with a kidnapper--if Richard was a kidnapper.

As for your explanation as to why Angela suddenly remembered on LKL that "oh, yes, why I did call Moul's, but"--I think you've got it exactly right.

Varina, I've stated over and over that it is possible Ricci did not have anything to do with this crime. It would not surprise me if he did not, and it would not surprise me if he did. There are too many unanswered questions about this case, even in the realm of things we know about, like the Jeep problem.

I don't think Ricci wanted to clean out the Jeep, since he left it at Moul's place in filthy condition. He merely removed personal items from it, which I do myself when I leave my vehicle in the shop. Trouble is that the type of personal items he removed, the condition in which he left the Jeep, and the time frame during which the Jeep was missing, added to Ricci's refusal to enlighten LE about the situation, serves to cast suspicion upon Ricci.

Moul knows Ricci. Moul talked to Ricci when he returned the Jeep. Moul is not deaf, dumb, or blind. If I had to choose one of them as a liar, it would be the drug-addicted, ex-convict, who stood accused of armed bank robbery and burglary in a dwelling place in the nighttime.

Sure, it could have been an upstanding member of the community. While that would be possible, it would be improbable. The vast majority of people who commit violent crimes against persons are people like Ricci. Indeed, kidnapping and any crime during which a gun was used, are de facto violent crimes.

So, while I do not have enough information to definitively state that Ricci committed this crime, when it comes to a choice between Ricci and Moul, or between Ricci and an upstanding member of the community, I choose Ricci.

It could have been another scumbag, but the odds are it was a scumbag who did this.

That's why some people think Ricci did not act alone. I stated earlier that the evidence which points to his having had an accomplice is also evidence which could be characterized as being in his favor.

Yes. That is, it's SOP to throw out the charges against him. There is no point in going on with prosecution of him, what would they do if they proved the case, lock up his ashes?

Clarification: Richard Ricci funeral

About 120 people signed the guest book at Richard Ricci's funeral Friday night. A story in Saturday's Deseret News listed a lower number.

Did he commit any of these other crimes (bank robbery, theft of the neighbors house, theft of the Smart's house) after they were married?

Your reference to M. Scott Peck's book, "People of the Lie," intrigued me, so I went and looked it up. Below are some exerpts from the book, wherein Peck describes the nature and characteristics of evil:

(Page 129) "Evil people would be distinguished by these traits:

a) Consistent destructive, scapegoating behavior, which may often be quite subtle

b) Excessive, albeit usually covert, intolerance to criticism and other forms of narcissistic injury

c) Pronounced concern with a public image and self-image of respectability, contributing to a stability of lifestyle but also to pretentiousness and denial of hateful feelings or vengeful motives.

d) intellectual deviousness, with an increased likelihood of a mild schizophreniclike disturbance of thinking at times of stress."

(Page 75) "Utterly dedicated to preserving their self-image of perfection, they are unceasingly engaged in the effort to maintain the appearance of moral purity. They are acutely sensitive to social norms and what others might think of them. They seem to live lives that are above reproach. The words "image", "appearance" and "outwardly" are crucial to understanding the morality of 'the evil'. While they lack any motivation to be good, they intensely desire to appear good. Their goodness is all on a level of pretense. It is in effect a lie.......It often happens then that 'the evil' may be recognized by its very disguise. Because they are such experts at disguise, it is seldom possible to pinpoint the maliciousness of 'the evil'. The disguise is usually impenetrable."

Your statement that "evil does masquerade as light" would appear to be very much in keeping with Peck's concept of evil........and it is a masquerade that is very difficult to detect. Thanks for this very thought provoking reference.

The feds are just quicker and more streamlined in their criminal prosecutions. The state charges will be ended, too. The man is dead, and that's that, it's over as to his criminal cases.
