Why in the WORLD would people invite a strange homeless man to stay in their house with them when there are children present? I can understand wanting to be nice or charitable, but these days you can't take such chances with your kids! Poor little lamb. (Same holds true for the Van Dams--the kids' welfare should come first!!)

It's unbelievable -- but at the same time all too believable.

Do you remember the cannibal Albert Fish, who was electrocuted in 1936 for the murder of poor 10-year-old Grace Budd? After reading a "situation wanted" ad in the paper by a teenager who wanted a position "in the country," Fish wound up going to the apartment of the young man who'd posted it. Saying he would come back later to pick up the teenage boy to take him to his farm, he mentioned he was going to his niece's birthday party, then invited young Grace to join him. Her father let her go because they were poor and "she hadn't seen many good times." In short, they let her leave with a man they'd met only a couple of hours earlier. Fish wound up not only killing her, but also sending the family letters of how he'd cooked her body parts and ate them. When sentenced to death, Fish thanked the judge for allowing him to be executed, saying something to the effect of "this will be the biggest thrill yet."

Then there's the horrific story of Sylvia Likens, whose carny parents entrusted her care to one Gertrude Baniszewski while they traveled the carnival circuit in the early 1960's. Sylvia's father didn't even stick his head in the door of Baniszewski's rundown flat to see what the conditions were (there were only three spoons in the house when Sylvia was dropped off and only one! when she died), and over the next few months Sylvia was starved, beaten, sexually tortured, given scalding baths, and eventually died after teenage tormentors (with Baniszewski's encouragement) burned the message "I'm a prostitute and proud of it!" into her belly. After that diabolic event, Baniszewski tried to give Sylvia some crackers in the hope the food would keep her alive; Sylvia responded "Give it to the dog, it's hungrier than I am." She died later that day.

I realize this is gut-wrenching stuff, but the point I'm trying to make is that there are many people who are...well...stupid, and it's not a new trend. Thanks to the media and Internet, we hear about it much more frequently than before, but it's a case of "the more things change..."

Did you utter that word after reading your own posts? You, madam, are truly unbelievable, if you do not understand how these events will impact a non-sequestered jury. It really doesn't matter whether or not you think Westerfield is guilty; the poster was only stating that these horrible events will give the jurors much more reason to arrive at a guilty verdict even though they are not related to the evidence at hand. See if you can follow this:

1) A jury acquitted Avila of sexual molestation charges several years ago. The Westerfield jury knows all about it because they weren't sequestered
2) Avila has been arrested for the brutal slaying of Samantha Runion, and the sheriff announces he's "100% sure" Avila is the perpetrator.
3) This jury will think, "We can't take a chance of letting something like that happen again -- let's vote guilty and let him worry about the appeal."

If you don't understand that line of reasoning, you are thick as a brick.

After reading the last few of my own posts, I got a little bothered by them. Reading up on the science forensics is a hobby of mine. It was always my dream to be a forensic pathologist, it has been since I was 16 (My first job was in a funereal home). A forensic scientist has to remain unmoved by what he/she sees, has to in order to do thier job. But during these threads, with all their lively banter, all their hilarious posts, all the fussing and fighting, I lost completely forgot about Danielle. And as I have a Dannielle of my own, I was saddened and ashamed of myself. But for the grace of God go I.

I also thought of David Westerfield and his children, How if he is innocent or gulty, His children will suffer for it. How if he is acquitted - he will never be exonerated in the eyes of the media or his neighbors no matter how innocent he may be. The whole situation is sad.

I've been in and out too...am trying to catch up. I had a much better example, but I lost the link, will keep looking. The thumb can be in a different position...the back of the hand is arched so the top of the palm sticks out a little bit. If you can figure out the proper form, it changes the position of the thumb.. the sketch I posted was CLOSE, but not exact. Here's another example..but I"m still looking for the better one. I think it was valpal1 that brought this up before...I wish I would have bookmarked where the other sketch was. I *thought* they were on the same website. Here's one to take a looksee at. If the hand or wrist is manipulated by a 2nd party, say by restraints or whatever, the thumb could be manipulated even further.

Back in feb and march, the fights started partially because of that very thing. A lot of us couldn't believe the hostility towards the victims parents and spoke out against it...the sides were drawn...as a result. It wasn't by choice...and all in all, none of us lost site of the fact that DW could be innocent.

Anyway, between you, ucansee2, Judy and numerous others, who want peaceful discussion, maybe we can finally achieve it..
