What are your nominations for Best Novel Ever Written? I just don't think any novel was better written than From Here To Eternity. That book affected me at many levels.

Forgot to mention The Naked and The Dead. Very good. Norman Mailer shot his wad on that one. He had something to say in Naked, and said it. It's been so much blather ever since.

I am amazed nobody here mentioned The Thin Red Line and Whistle, the second and third books of James Jones's fabulous From Here to Eternity trilogy!

The best novel I ever read was Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer.

War of the Worlds
The Time Machine
Red Storm Rising
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Brothers Karamazov. It's not as pretentious and boring as it sounds. In fact, it seems to me to be more "modern" than modern novels. Best one I've read anyway.

Not a novel, but the best book I ever read was Dante's work now known as The Divine Comedy. For the most enjoyable read (not the same as what I thought was the best, of course), I'm with the LOTR crew here. However, you've sold me on giving From Here To Eternity a try.

I'm just wondering if Newt Gingrich ever wrote the sequel to 1945.
I'm still waiting to see how that cliffhanger ending came out.

My absolute favorite novel, bar none, is Kristin Lavransdatter. It's also about three bazillion pages long...but as a LOTR fan, I guess that fits pretty well into my world. ;-)
