I dunno, Hair...it might be worth the R rating to see Merry cut off some orcs arms and hands! Good old Merry!

You know, I remember back in December reading on TORN, that FOTR got a 15's rating in some Scandinavian country; Norway or Sweden I think. It was also very close to getting a 15's rating in the UK, but instead the censor made it PG-12's but for only the second time in British movie history, an extra advisory warning was issued pointing out high levels of 'strong fantasy violence'.

Seemingly, the way it works is thay violence in a fantasy context is not as bad as say somebody getting their head chopped off in a war movie, or in a violent thriller.

Also, LOTR had no sex/nudity/strong language. So while the violence would have been R in any other movie, because it was fantasy and had no sex/nudity/language at all, it managed to get the PG cert.

yes... I think the type of violence and the setting is important... showing an imaginary type of evil creature get beheaded is different than showing an innocent victim get beheaded.

Given the expected sales of the DVD, I wonder if they will unveil the latest and greatest anti-piracy techniques?

BTW, are you going to buy a copy of the real DVD?

I sure am!
And the Extended Version too.

I just wondered. Me too.

I also wonder about their strategy since they seem to be pricing it lower than I would. My guess for that is anti-piracy crap on the DVD which may be a big pain-in-the-ass for a lot of people.

Yeah, I have that message across the bottom too. I think mine is probably one of the first DVD screener versions (it hit the net quite a while ago) and yours was probably the final version, since the opening is different. I'm kind of disappointed that they changed the opening, I liked the mysteriousness of that opening....

I don't know, weren't you 'turned on' by the Aragorn/Arwen sequence?!?
(Just a joke!)

they changed the opening

Doesn't take you long to get rigid and set in your ways!... hehehe

I am looking forward enough to the regular August cut, but I can't imagine how fun it will be watching the Directors cut for the first time waiting for the first little new thing! I think we all would notice even the most miniscule 2 second addition to any scene by now don't you?

I have it as well, and have had it for a couple of months. DVD quality, copied onto a set of cd's. But I saw it in the theater nine times. At this point, until the directors cut is released, my reaction is to yawn.

lordoftherings.net says that the extended version will not be R rated after all, just PG-13.

"Although there was speculation that the Special Extended Edition (on VHS and DVD in November) would be rated R, it is actually rated PG-13. Both versions of movie received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA for 'epic battle sequences and some scary images'."
