I'm about 90% sure it's protocol. I had completely forgotten about that, to be honest.
And can it authenticate against a database?
This I don't know at all, but I guess with the 9-character limitation it's sort of irrelevant. I'm not hung up on IRC so much as I'm really against bad Java software that takes forever to load and generally ends up crashing your machine after a certain amount of time. If you can find one that doesn't make my computer freeze, I'll be quite happy, even if it is a slow loader.
But... what I really want is voice capability. IRC doesn't do that, and neither does NFC Chat-- so, I'll ditch it as soon as I find one that does.
Well ... just keep in mind us Mac and Linux/Unix people, please! No Windows-only chat software!
Hey, I do know about this software: http://moock.org/chat/client.html. I don't know how expandable it is or whether authentication is available or anything. But I do know it loads instantly and seems to actually work. Might be work a look-see...
