The orc may have needed another shot from Gimli's axe.... That butt-shot from Legolas was not his best shot to date... and not a fatal wound.
Legolas might still be trying to get the hang of shooting from a moving horse.

My family likes LOTR well enough, especially my son, but the kids are grown and away and my wife isn't really into it that much, so you're right, the Hole is a great place to hang out with like minded folks, all conservatives too, no less.
