I get FR_Hobbit_Hole messages as email. JenB just sent:

Hi guys,

My computer is temporarily out of commission and I can't even seem to log into FR right now, so here's to let you know I'll be mostly out of it for a little while. No Elf-bashing while I'm gone, and I'll get back as soon as possible!

Jen

The story does inspire personal growth, and a searching for higher truth. And so yes, it does leave us more hungry for salvation.

All real truth (I know that's a little redundant) belongs to God. And all truth will lead to Him.

God created everything, and as such He will use anything and everything He so desires to bring people to Him.

We have on the wall in the little one's room one of Madeline L'Engles prayers, thanking God for fairy tales, part of it says "there is nothing made that you have not thought of..."

To me, it's a wonderful concept that God gave Tolkien the ability to write about elves, and dwarves, and hobbits and wizards and orcs and rings...and to weave that into a story that points to a higher being, a higher purpose.

Bombing Mecca is terrorism, and I think we want to avoid the "anything goes because I am right" mentality, unless we are ready to adopt a strategy of elimination ourselves, in which case symbolism doesn't matter. We just wipe out all of them.

But then what are we?

We can win because we are stronger, in a Darwinist elimination, but that is a different strategy than taking out their ability to strike at us, and hoping they change from within... I don't think we are there yet.

We need to take out Iraq, probably, because he is the dude with the guns. He isn't the Religious leader, you are right... he is the guy in the smoky backroom that they go to, I think.

However, I think we should be focusing on Saudi Arabia, not Iraq. What will get the message to the Muslims faster, bom-bing Babylon, er, Baghdad or bom-bing Mecca and Medina?

I agree with some of your ideas, but as I said on other threads, what we think about this does not matter. The decisions are being made, and the rock has rolled too far downhill and is moving too fast to be diverted. Whatever we think, this nation is going to be fighting a war in Iraq before Christmas. Our only choices are to support our soldiers, or oppose them, there is no middle way, and there is nothing whatsoever we can do to change the decisions that have been made.

If all things were equal, I'd agree and say we go after Saudi Arabia.

But just look at the hissy fits being thrown around the world when we threaten to deal with Iraq, and the world knows some of the atrocities Saddam has committed.

The message needs to be clear. Saddam is part of the problem. Not the whole problem, but part. And the message needs to be that, once we take care of him, we will not consider the job finished until we have eliminated the threat of terrorism.

That forum is for superhot flame wars, and they have taken to moving hot threads there. The rules are much relaxed there about how nasty you can be. Despite that, I managed to get a post pulled on Sunday, no less!
