Well, as long as I'm here...

Darn, thought I had that one. Nice little snag there.
I'm off to bed.

One of my favorite works of fiction of all time. I will look for it, thanks! :)

Not even a spam, so Hair can't add to the key words! (nyahh!)
Good night to both of you... I think I may sign off and go read some history of Middle Earth...

Good night All.
the possible cross-thought contamination...
That's a great phrase, actually.

That's a great phrase, actually. Thank you! Off the cuff too (blush).
Have a good night... I'm off myself to do some book reading before bedtime. Good night all!

There's a really wonderful book called Rose, by Martin Cruz Smith, that I think you might like, set in a mining town in the UK, in Victorian times. Is it as good as Gorky Park?

Evening all. Just thought you would like to know that it is now only 100 days until The Two Towers!!

Fiddler on the Roof is so absolutely worth renting!I'll second that. By the way, John Williams won his first Academy Award for this film - he adapted, arranged and conducted the music.

Pasties originated in Cornwall in England... they came to the U.S. with immigrant Cornish iron miners who came to find work in the Upper Michigan and Minnesota iron rangesThat makes two connections with them for me. Cornwall is of course, as a lot of folks forget, one of the Celtic peoples conquered by the Brits, the earliest ones who were not forced to emigrate. Cornwall was originally called South Wales. Since they were working as iron miners in the Upper Great Lakes, likely they ran into my Finnish grandfather, who worked there at the end of the last century. I notice that one of the pasty shops in that link was the Kaleva Pasty Shop, link is not good unfortunately, which might even have Finnish pasty recipes!
I have heard of pasties, and thought the concept interesting. It is too bad that this sort of meal has been replaced by the sandwich, no vegetables in them, except for lettuce and tomatoes. I have saved the link, and look forward to trying a recipe or two.

It is a story of Jews in pre-revolution Russia, but it is really a story of maintaining traditions in the face of changing times, and it is about fathers and daughters.Yes it is a lovely story, based on the stories of Shalom Aleikum (sp?), pseudonym of an early 20th century Jewish author. He was a totally secular Jew, was very anti-clerical, and despised the old semi-peasant traditions which are sentimentalized in the musical. He was also a virulent socialist. Very much a progenitor of the sort of liberal Jewish person who now finances the Democrat party. Fortunately, almost nothing of his prejudices are seen in Fiddler, so you can really forget about them, unless you are tempted to read his original stories, in which case it is good to remember where he is coming from.

How were the days of the Hobbit Hole residents? It was okay....no one was on when the race started so I was off for the night.
Good Morning, everyone!
To: HairOfTheDog
Tomorrow I do the barn. Speaking of barn, how are the bunnies doing?
Just catching up.....I'll be with you in a minute!
To: Overtaxed
Good morning!
The bunnies are just fine, including that little tiny one that I think was orphananed or abandoned too early. I watched him grow up.
I am starting to see the coyotes I would expect to show up wherever there is a healthy rabbit population. He and I have been marking our respective territories.
For the most part he can hunt out in the pasture without raising my wrath. The horses ignore him, and Gidgets hysterics pretty much keep him from the paddock, and from the rabbit holes at the edges of it. My bunny family has their own guard dog. I don't know if he gets braver at night when Gidget is not watching or not.

Just wondering. I'll have to tell g'nad the deer hunt is off. Sister doesn't want the deer shot. so I'll have to put up with munched vegetables or start a fight in the family. :(

in which case it is good to remember where he is coming from. Well, he was coming from at time when the Socialist revolution seemed like a good idea!
To: Overtaxed
Yes, better to keep peace in the family!
You know what? - I think I shall go back to bed for a bit! - I think I can use a couple more hours of lazy!
To: HairOfTheDog
Good Night!
To: HairOfTheDog
Well, he was coming from at time when the Socialist revolution seemed like a good idea!I admit that there was a certain amount of logic for a Jew to joining what seemed like the only possibly effective movement to oppose the Czar! On the other hand, these guys were no sweethearts either (see Doestoyevsky's The Posessed)! There is a lot less excuse for their ideological descendants, considering that they tend to be part of the economic and social elite in this country! There is an old saying that Jews live like Episcopalians and vote like Blacks, except that a lot of Episcopalians vote like Blacks these days.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
I think really I should beat you with a stick for that last post!
But yes, to them, the Socialists were someone with a plan. Any plan was better than nothing.
Good morning, again. I am trying this awake thing again.
