I've driven through Iowa a couple of times.
It's very flat.
To: g'nad
See, your problem is that you live in
Northern Virginia and that's really a different state.
Head to the Eastern Shore, head to Southwest Virginia, drive through the Shenandoah Valley. That's Virginia.

You dove across I-80 I take it?...Yeah, the northern half of the state is fairly flat, and the further NW you go, the flatter it gets...Iowa is not nearly as flat as Nebraska, norther kansas, or the Dakotas
Southern Iowa, where I'm from, is rolling hills, timber and small farms...used to be a lot of soft coal and gypsum mining... at the beginning of the 20th century, Iowa was the biggest producer of soft coal...the Eastern areas along the Mississippi and Western near the the Missouri are pretty rolling hills...

Head to the Eastern Shore, head to Southwest Virginia, drive through the Shenandoah Valley. That's Virginia. It's all VA pal... I love the Shenandoah and SW VA...looked into property there, but it's just too durned expensive fer a tired old jarhead...Southern VA is flatter than most area in Iowa...
I'm lookin' to move back to the midwest (Ozarks preferably) when I retire next year...
We're lucky to live onthe Base here...it's like a big green quiet calm oasis in the middle of the madness...it's so bad here, I don't like to go anywhere on weekends cuz the gridlock...It can take an hour and a half to get to Fredericksburg 20 miles away...

You dove across I-80 I take it?.Nope, I-35, heading north. The parts we saw were in the northern and western parts of the state. Those pics are of some really pretty country, I'll grant you that!
To: ksen
Thanks...I swiped'em from an Iowa tourism site...you can probably understand why I long to get back, grow a big garden, and spend some time alone and with my family in country like that...I'm not whinin' or complainin', but I'm tired...I wanna go home...

I was in Iowa once... I loved it. It was in the summer (June)... and it was green and lush... Rates up there as one of my favorite states!
To: carton253
smeagol, you'll be happy to know 4 y/o g'nad jr gets a kick out of imitating gollum's voice from the trailer..."we wants it! My precious"...he thinks "the twisted guy" is pretty neat...He still thinks axes are the coolest though...

Smeagol is in the house!!!!! Should we lock up the silverware? :)
To: g'nad

I came back on leave once in early June, not having been back for 5 years, and was stunned to see just how green it was...lush is right...and I was coming from the tropics...so it wasn't like I was coming from a desert...it really made an impression on me...
