Some guy (the manufacturor of the engraved whistle I'm wanting) got on there and basically said that the people on C&F were of no consequence and mattered nothing to him or his company. Only professionals had an opinion worth listening to, in other words.

People are beginning to think he's a flake. Here's my post to him...

Then a month or so ago, some guy got on there and unleashed a barage of insults, only to regret it later and apologize...aparently had taken some Dilaudid or something wierd like that and it made him rant.

Thank you! I will say, you're not the person I disagreed with. :)

In fact I agree with you about the arguing that takes place, very few minds ever get changed. And the open-minded people willing to actually think about a position, rather than just mindlessly repeat some slogan, seem to be fewer and farther between every day.

Anyway, that's probably too many deep thoughts for late night in the Hobbit Hole, don't you think? ;)

I like arguing on some of them, but some folks are so arrogant that there's just no point.

I think that one is interesting because it changes the meaning for me from what I always thought it meant.

I thought it spoke of a "quick-draw gone bad" - a stupid or careless mistake that caused you to lose.... Not a deliberate self-destructive act to escape a fight!

How many of you knew this origin? - am I the only one that is new around here?

Here too... I had always taken it to refer to doing something stupid and hurting your cause. The origin made perfect sense once I heard it... and it does change the meaning of the phrase. Of course, the phrase has accumulated a colloquial meaning over the years too, which has changed it from it's origin.
