What happens if you lay out the cash for a water trough, and a crow croaks in it too? Is your horse going to insist you send him out water in a glass on a tray?

The horse combo-vaccines I have in my refrigerator (the horses are due, and I just haven't gotten around to it yet) don't contain vaccine for west nile, just everything that we have around here. I am gonna call my vet this morning, and if he thinks I should, I will have him drop by and give the west nile vaccine. Some people I know that travel to faraway events and horse shows immunize for it, but I don't think it is commonly given here.

Maybe it will just take him a while to get comfortable with the bucket again.
Time for me to go to work... will be back around lunchtime.

If I lay out the cash for a new water trough, I will install a crow safety ladder inside to prevent any future critters from croaking! - the troughs are expensive!

You should be alright this time but keep a pair around just in case you need them again. When I see a small dead animal anywhere but on the side of the highway, rabies is the first thing I think of. : (
It may be the bleach smell that has your horses leery of the water but that should clear up rather quickly.
Lurker Beth is online now and I am waiting for her to get caught up reading our posts.

Hullo all, dreary day in NOVA...good to be back...
Sounds like you've had a little excitement Hair. Reminds me of the time I was scouting and filled my then empty canteen in a spring-fed stream (before water filters)...I was just taking a drink when I noticed the rotted, submerged cacass of a deer 10 yards upstream... I kinda figured that's why the H2O had a little wang to it...

I will install a crow safety ladder inside to prevent any future critters from croaking! You might want to check your insurance policy...you wouldn't want any crow's bereaved family to bring a lawsuit...sneakin

Welcome back!
Was that you I saw on the Durham Freeway with an axe in the gunrack and a .45 on the dash? :)

I should have worn gloves, but we have very few cases of rabies here either, and that was not my first thought... It has been years since the last cases of rabies in WA, and those were rare incidences in bats. But I do have a vaccine for that in my fridge! Should I shoot myself in the butt with it? ;~D
To: g'nad
Ugh... yeah... that would make me a little less thirsty!
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes there have been 7 cases in CT. 3 of the horses died. There is an effective vaccine and your vet should know whether or not you "westies" should worry. Good luck!

"Should I shoot myself in the butt with it? ;~D"
Ouch!!! Not yet, wait until you start foaming at the mouth and trying to bite anything within sight. Just kidding, but I heard that an advanced stage of rabies is not a pretty sight. The movie, "Old Yeller" comes to mind.
To: Inge_CAV
I usually put a bit of bleach in the horse water when we are camping, to kill the Giardia (sp?) that might be in the water up in our woods... and he always comes around to drinking that.
I wish I had known this tragedy was going on, I would have helped the crow out. but alas, I was in Seattle yesterday and missed it.
To: Inge_CAV
I haven't seen Old Yeller in years, but wasn't there a twist at the end, where after they shot the poor growling dog, it turned out that there was some animal he was growling at, and he may not have at rabies at all?
To: g'nad
Did you find a spot upstream to re-fill at? - or did you just wait till the next stream?

Was that you I saw on the Durham Freeway with an axe in the gunrack and a .45 on the dash? :) LOL! I came down the 85... .45 in my concealment holster, axe in the bed...(I need to get a gunrack...)
I woulda waved to Corin in Richmond, but I almost hit the better part of a vehicle suspension lyin' in the middle of the bridge goin' South outta town on 95...
The return trip was punctuated be me swervin' to avoid the trail of 2x4s that stretched for miles... a semi didn't check it's load...I finally caught up to him, doing my best stunt driver impersonation and pulled him over...I told him he needed to clean it up...wonder if he did...(yeah right...)sneakin
To: HairOfTheDog
Only saw the original version and do not remember a twist to it. The dog was fastened in the corn crib after the fight with the wolf and was growling at the boy who shot him. A sad story.

I just went without... put a dip of Copenhagen in to cut my thirst...and sanitize my system...sneakin

Let me see, dead crows in water buckets, drinking out of a stream with a dead deer in it, West Nile Virus, rabies . . . what a lovely way to start the day. Perhaps Overtaxed could show us a nice breakfast at this point. I think I'll go back to complaining about Gandalf's demonstration of support for the lavendar agenda, if you don't mind!!
