I'm pretty wishy washy on this. It wouldn't take much to change my opinion...

I hope Jen is researching!.... She started this and she is missing!

You know, just hearing Gandalf saying "There is a union now between the two towers...Orthanc and Barad-Dur" is enough to convince me. ;-)

I'm off for my check-up and then to see the movie. See you all later! Have this little debate cleared up before I get in, would you? LOL

Are the Istari (wizards) the same as the Maiar? I haven't come across the answer yet in my reading. Yes... from the Encylopedia of Arda
Istari
The Wizards
Dates: Came to Middle-earth c. III 1000. Saruman was slain in III 3019 and Gandalf left Middle-earth in III 3021; the fates of the other Istari are unknown
Race: Ainur
Division: Maiar
Pronunciation: ee'staree
Meaning: 'Wise Ones'
Other Names: Ithryn, Wizards
Titles: Istari is a plural term; the singular form (equivalent to 'wizard') is istar
The order of Wizards, the Maiar who came to Middle-earth after the first millennium of the Third Age. Of these, five came to the northwestern regions; Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando.

Frodo is hearing Gandalf read the "All that glitters is not gold" letter. Sigh....wish they could have gotten that part in the movie.

Typical elf. Maybe she's off practicing the flutophone. :)

UPDATE:
Sam is singing a song about Gil-Galad now, boy, he sounds a lot like Sting.

Gandalf is a Maiar, Sauron is(was?) a Maiar, balrogs are fallen Maiar, Aragorn has Maiar blood. Sheesh there are more Maiar connections in LoTR than you can shake a stick at, bunch of troublemakers.
I suppose the fact that Aragorn has Maiar blood contributes to why Sauron would fear him.
UPDATE:
Strider is reciting the story of Berin(sp?) and Luthien. ;^)

Sauron is listed as a Maiar, but not an Istari in the Enclyclopia of Arda... is this a fine distinction?
To: HairOfTheDog
Doesn't "Istari" refer to those Maiar that were sent to Middle Earth?
To: ksen
And I wouldn't go shaking sticks at Maiar... they take that kind of thing seriously.
