the first lead guitarist of the Yardbirds was Top Topham, who, sadly, passed away a couple of years ago. When the YBs wanted to go pro, Topham’s parents said no, so they got Eric Clapton. He left because he thought “For Your Love” was too commercial, and he did his stint with the Blues Breakers. So the YBs got Jeff Beck.

When bassist Paul Samwell-Smith wanted to go into producing, the YBs got Jimmy Page. The idea was for rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja to learn bass and Beck and Page would be dual lead guitarists. This configuration shows up in a clip of “Blow Up”, a movie 99.9% of us have never seen (other than the clip).

All of that with proviso “if memory serves”.
