One of the catchers - I do not recall which team - made two flawless back hand scoops on outside pitches in the dirt, with men on base both times, once with a man on third, who would have scored.
Ohtani probably would have gone home after 4:30 or 12 innings if it was in Japan. Under NPB style rules also used in Korea (but not in Taiwan for postseason games), the game would have been a tie game, with a potential Game 8 in Toronto.
The postseason rules in Japan, for reference, has changed in the past 40 years.
Until 1986: All games had a 4:30 time limit. (Once the time limit was reached, the game would end upon the conclusion of that inning.) Game 1 of the 1986 Japan Series ran 14 innings before the clock struck triple zero, and it led to a Game 8.
1987-1993: 18 innings in Games 1-7, no limit starting in Game 8.
1994-2017: 15 innings (this was in all baseball media posted because of the MLBPA strike as the Japan Series was the fall classic in1 994), no limit starting in Game 8.
2018-2019: Standard overtime limits in use as regular season, 12 innings. No limit starting in Game 8.
2020: No extra innings in regular season or first two rounds of postseason play. The 12-inning limit was used in the Japan Series, except in Game 8.
2021: No extra innings in regular season or the first two rounds of postseason play. Because of the Olympic Break and an excessive postponed games from the China Lockdowns, that Series was run in late November with special rules that fortunately were not needed because most games were indoors in domes. If an excessive number of tie games or postponements happened, November 30 would be the last possible day of the season. Whoever led after November 30 won the Series. The last game of the Series would be played with the WBSC 2-runner tiebreaker starting in the 13th inning that was in play at the time for the High School tournament.
(For reference, in Taiwan, they played their championship into December — Chinatrust defeated Uni-President in four with the Taiwan Series that year ending December 1 in Mayor Will Lai’s Tainan — the current President of that country.)
That Japan Series most notably with San Diego’s Adam Jones (a former Baltimore Oriole) hitting a home run in Game 5 that gave him a nickname of immortality in baseball — “Mr. Thanksgiving” with his 9th inning home run for Orix against Yakult being called the Turkey Shot because it took place on American Thanksgiving. Naturally, he hit the home run off the American closer. It was his last professional home run.
Since 2022: Since regular season play returned to the 3-extra inning limit, postseason was the same as the regular season except starting with Game 8. Starting in Game 8, after 12 innings, the the WBSC 2-runner tiebreaker starts the 13th inning.
The WBSC 2-runner tiebreaker uses two “ghost runners” and preceded MLB’s rule, which is based on softball’s 8th inning rule. The runners are on first and second.
