The issue is both.
Labor markets are like any other market: it's ruled by supply and demand.
You over increase supply, prices drop like a rock.
The added kicker for labor markets are this: those "prices that drop like a rock" are attached to your fellow citizen's lives - their ability to own a home, to attract a wife, to raise a family, to have a retirement.
So please keep this in mind when you think about immigration.
It isn't just you, I'm sometimes attracted by this argument as well.
For example, I see what is happening to farmers in South Africa, and I really sympathize with them. But before opening the doors to them, I'd first want to check with existing US family farmers to see what the overall situation is.
Another datapoint of reality:
I worked with a Frenchman who my company was sponsoring for a Green Card.
The dude was whiter than I am. He was a perfect exemplar of current "European culture".
He ALSO was an outspoken advocate for being able to murder your children up until, say, 1 to 1.5 years after birth. Claimed they're not sentient, no higher-order thought, so killing them is A-OK.
Last I checked, this A-hole is a VP at an "Alphabet" (i.e. Google-owned) company.

There are houses that are standing out here empty. Some, including business properties, that stand uninhabited until they just collapse.
