In my opinion his “Today I started loving you again” was one of his best recordings - if not the best.
And Bonnie Owens never got the recognition she deserved; her vocals were a big part of his success.
"Okie from Muskogee" spoke to those hard-working Americans with traditional values whom President Nixon called the "silent majority" in a speech that he gave while the song was riding the charts.

“Muskogee” was impossible for a Vietnamese associate super smart as he was to pronounce correctly even though I sang that phrase from the song to him several times.
Merle’s live version of “Okie From Muskogee” is the one most heard today. It is a much faster paced version of the original studio version.
