“The Fightin’ Side of Me”
One of his greatest!
That’s my birthplace. Really.
I liked his singing.
TO ALL get this FREEPATHON done. DONATE ONCE every 3 months-is that a big deal?
“The main message is about pride” meant something completely different back in ‘69. The bastard leftists stole the word and co-opted it for evil.
Just as they did with “gay.”
Fascinating!
1970 moved to Enterprise Oklahoma...
Should have stayed !

>> “My father was an Okie from Muskogee when ‘Okie’ was considered a four-letter word....”
“The roots of my raisin’ run deep”... one of my personal favorites.
In my opinion his “Today I started loving you again” was one of his best recordings - if not the best.
And Bonnie Owens never got the recognition she deserved; her vocals were a big part of his success.
"Okie from Muskogee" spoke to those hard-working Americans with traditional values whom President Nixon called the "silent majority" in a speech that he gave while the song was riding the charts.
The Marching Hippies--Guy Drake (1971)
So, who’s gonna fill their shoes?
Maybe that's why an altered spelling of the word (with five letters) was used in the title of this hit:
Oakie Boogie--Jack Guthrie & His Oklahomans (1947)
The tune also was a hit in England.
Oakie Boogie--Ted Heath (1953)
My favorite is “Going Where the Lonely Go.”
“Muskogee” was impossible for a Vietnamese associate super smart as he was to pronounce correctly even though I sang that phrase from the song to him several times.
Merle’s live version of “Okie From Muskogee” is the one most heard today. It is a much faster paced version of the original studio version.

Checotah has a population of only 3,335. It is also the hometown of country singers Carrie Underwood and Mel McDaniel.
