More than anything else, what it took was a satanic impulse to kill a prominent Christian.
The internet was used to spread the idea — within a population of already marginally-stable individuals — that they had the right to use deadly force against those who refused to share their delusions, and against anyone who supported those who refused to share their delusions.
The most severely crazed subpopulation within this population have taken action, believing they have not only the right but the duty to murder those who will not share their delusions.
The psychosocial dynamic here may be related to that which causes different sects within the mohammadan faith to murder each other.

If you watch his campus debates, he invited the worst Leftists to debate him - they get to pick the subject..
In previous years, most wanted to debate him on abortion, their flagship issue.
Many wanted to debate on whether Trump is Hitler, or gun control, or whether Israel is committing genocide.
More recently, they are preoccupied with transgenders.. specifically they want to debate the conservative claim that a disproportionate percentage of school shooters are trans.
IMHO, it is not at all surprising that they were debating that when he got murdered.
