Motown also had The Funk Brothers. Yes, but the Funk Brothers was not something that was intended. We aren't even sure when that name was coined, but it was just the group of Motown studio musicians that worked for Motown. They were never even credited until 1971 on Marvin Gaye's What's Goin On. [There's a story that Gaye refused to record a track unless Jimmy Jamerson was found to play bass. He ran to every bar on the Sunset Strip. I don't blame him, I would have done the same thing. And Gaye was a drummer, so I guess that mattered a lot to him. marvin gaye - what's going on acapella & bass.]

There were several white musicians in the group like Dennis Coffey, Joe Messia, Bob Babbitt, and Jack Brokensha.

Don’t forget the golden age of Jazz...1950-1970.

That was a pretty good summation from the pop culture point of view. I was there. Still got the stack of vinyl albums to prove it.

Dennis Coffey had left Motown when he did this.

He’s in hell because he’s likely responsible for the end of Jazz.

When everyone started playing like him, the world quit listening.

12 tone crap.

Also, those guys would sometime play on non-Motown records, but they could get fined for it:

Cool Jerk by the Capitols

Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher (Best Quality)

So what’s your opinion of Ornette Coleman?

(LOL, I imagine it would be in line with Max Roach’s opinion)

I miss AM Radio.

It's not gone completely. Yeserday, I discovered KYNO, which broadcasts Oldies, mainly from the 60s, out of Fresno, Calif. It exudes a 60s feel, with call signs that sound like those of the era, and 60s-style newscasts featuring the sound of a teletype in the background as the announcer broadcasts news events of 2025. The 50,000-watt station can be heard through much of the San Joaquin Valley.

It lives on, sometimes hounded by heaven. Mick Jagger doubles down:
"Saint Of Me"

Saint Paul the persecutor
Was a cruel and sinful man
Jesus hit him with a blinding light
And then his life began
I said yeah
I said yeah

Augustine knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
And all the special pleasures
Of doing something wrong
I said yes
I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

And could you stand the torture
And could you stand the pain
Could you put your faith in Jesus
When you're burning in the flames
I said yes

And I do believe in miracles
And I wanna save my soul
And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold
I said yes, I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye

Come on

John the Baptist was a martyr
But he stirred up Herod's hate
And Salome got her wish
To have him served up on a plate
I said yes
I said yeah
I said yes

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye

I thought I saw an angel cry

You'll never make a saint of me
You'll never make a saint of me
Never make a saint of me
Never make a saint of me

I know, that was a great one. Coffey actually introduced the wah wah pedal to Wah Wah Watson. He had a few other minor hits. I think he still plays.

“So what’s your opinion of Ornette Coleman?”

About the same as Parker.

No key.

No melody.

No set rhythm.

It’s just not music in my book.

At least Coleman threw in some strange sounds.

Funk Brothers inspired different kinds of music:

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life

The Jam - Town Called Malice

Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl (Official Music Video)

The Decemberists - The Sporting Life

Daryl Hall & John Oates - Maneater (Official Video)

The Strokes - Last Nite [Also borrows from Tom Petty]

Are based on this:

The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

Technically, the song is written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, but I think the relevant part was created by Jimmy Jamerson and Benny Benjamin.

In like Ornette Coleman. I like Avant Garde, I just don't like fusion.
