If the sound of the stun gun scared it away, likely it wasn’t rabid- had it been, it’d likely kept attacking in berserker mode. But who knows. Hopefully not rabid.

This is what happens when you make an apex predator sacrosanct. Mountains lions are cannot be hunted in California. Take away the only predator they have, and you take away any fear of humans.

Later reports said the mountain lion was hunted down and killed.

I hate hearing this, enough are killed by trying to cross LAs busy freeways, which have created a DNA bottleneck. But humans trump mountain lions.

A new wildlife bridge is about to open in the area so wildlife that is hemmed in by the freeways can cross over:

Sunday’s attack is the 27th reported mountain lion attack on a human since 1986, according to the latest Fish and Wildlife data. The majority of the encounters were nonfatal. The most recent fatal attack was in March 2024 when a mountain lion killed a 21-year-old man in El Dorado County.

Repeal Prop 197. Of course, putting the cats back under DFW is almost as bad. Those clowns are delusional idiots.

Mountain lions are wildly overpopulated in California, and herbivory has taken a serious hit as a result. Hunting was much more humane than waiting for them to habituate to people then for both to suffer the consequences.

I remember when Mountain Lions in California were considered a “Protected species” and no hunting allowed.
Since then there have been quite a few problems with the growing population of the big cats.

https://www.sacbee.com/news/california/article182397016.html

https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Mammals/Mountain-Lion/Hunting

1972: Mountain lion hunting moratorium implemented due to declining populations.
1986: Mountain lions listed as a game species, though no hunting occurred.
1990: Mountain lions became a specially protected species with the passage of the California Wildlife Protection Act (Proposition 117).

How many tens of millions will California waste building their mountain lion crossover?

I see it more as people shouldn’t endanger wildlife by moving into its habitat, putting out bait (chicken coops, little kids gamboling about the coop in the early evening), and then get all surprised when wildlife acts naturally. I’m very glad the child wasn’t killed, but with parental foresight and common sense, perhaps she wouldn’t have been injured or the mountain lion killed.

Adrian Monk was right. It’s a jungle out there.

Would it cost more than the Train to Nowhere that doesn't have any track laid yet?

The wildlife crossovers, along with fencing, save many human lives from automobile/wildlife collisions in Oregon. Oregon Hunters Association promotes these crossovers.

Before the ban on maintaining a population conducive to coexistence, these cases only occurred when kittens were threatened or the adult was rabid.

Unfortunately, the lack of common sense on the part of the California people by accepting the falsehood that mountain lions are rare; and the lack of common sense on the parent is what led to this incident.

So you propose no new human habitations be allowed?

While no doubt much urban area could be cleaned and rebuilt better the two legged feral are the problem there.Including the twp legged ferals called poljtical leaders who prey on the weak.

I wonder how the animals know to use the bridge. Do they have signs up for them to read?
