I guess Asian countries of China, Japan, and SK will be the only places they exist for the foreseeable future.

Maybe Musk can resurrect the Hyperloop. He said it would exceed 700 mph.

Was it ever really going to happen?

These things may be the future but in the present are nothing but money pits. Don’t ask me how I know.

No, it was never going to be completed.

But it was going to pay several government cronies and relatives for many years of “consulting” work.

If it is a great idea, then make it a private company.

Much like the Texas rail, a great idea. Except for the opposition and cost.

“environmental review” has destroyed the country’s progress. Ironically environmentalists ruin the environment.

“Also, getting the train to max speed would require specific guideway geometry that “constrains the ability to avoid sensitive resources” like the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge.”

I like it - throw ‘environmentalism’ back IN THEIR FACES.

“I guess Asian countries of China, Japan, and SK will be the only places they exist for the foreseeable future.”

Thankfully so, it’s not needed in the US, and WE ARE BROKE. At most, just beef up the Amtrak route a bit.

“Was it ever really going to happen?”

Like the high speed rail in Texas (between Houston and Dallas) and California’s high speed rail, the answer is always the same: ONLY if they can get the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to pay for it, as state legislatures cannot print money.

Yes it’s needed. People are so tired of the airlines. They are worse than Greyhound ever was. They get worse every day.

Amtrak may be late but it gets you there. The airlines can’t even do that. They cancel flights left and right. I’d rather sleep on an Amtrak train while delayed, than in any airport.

I think more people are realizing this and starting to take train travel more and more. Try right now to book a sleeper car on Amtrak, you can’t. Not for at least a year it’s that booked up.

Couldn't agree more. Makes more sense (to me) to utilize existing infrastructure and upgrade the fleet.

Back in the 1980’s and 1990’s there was rail service between Balto and DC — MARC and Amtrak. I’m not sure how they were powered.

Washington, D.C. to New York through Baltimore. Can’t see much benefit to the rest of the United States. Let New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and the District pay for it.

One hundred sixty years ago, cross-country transportation via railroad was considered extremely fast, compared to horse/wagon/stagecoach travel.

Times change and the time of travel to/from rail depots must be considered these days, just the same as with the airports.

The Kalifornia HSR became a multi-$Billion joke, as the track plan was modified to stop in small cities well short of LA & SF.

“Yes it’s needed.”

With today’s internet, seems like business travel would be down.

You would have thought so by the 1980’s but that was not the case.

No people are traveling more than ever.

Plus why do planes have a “business class”? It’s for working people who need the quiet time while traveling to do work while they are traveling for their job.

If you recall I posted a story about a guy complaining about a father who brought his toddler into a business class flight recently and the kid screamed and was jumping up and down all over the seats. The father did nothing to control his behavior while everyone else wanted quiet for their travel.

Even Amtrak has a business class on it’s trains.
