They further try to blur the distinctions between legal and illegal by subversively leaving the adjective absent.

Legal or illegal?

It makes a difference!

In uniform so not a private security gig. Also, assume he was armed.

“He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city,” said NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch.

But it seems he wasn't in uniform. Was off-duty working security detail at the building entrance.

In uniform so not a private security gig.

Multiple outlets report the victim was working an off-duty job.

Police departments regularly have officers in uniform while working and being paid by private companies. From the NYPD Paid Detail Unit (PDU): "All Paid Detail police officers are considered off-duty, acting as private contractors... All officers will report in full uniform to the location designated by the vendor for check-in and assignment."

Why is this victim being so publicized and promoted?

Thanks for the information. The article was careful not to say it was a private gig, though given the circumstances what else could it be.

Armed or not armed?

Evidently full uniform with sidearm in holster, but he didn’t have time to draw it.

Sounds like a bad idea. I would be opposed to this. They should only be wearing an uniform while on duty.

It's not just the uniform, it's also that he's using his privilege of carrying a firearm, bestowed upon him as an off-duty New York City police officer working as a security guard.

This right to keep and bear arms is denied to regular New York City citizens, and that denial of rights is enforced by officers of the New York City police department. The other victims were told "We're denying you your inalienable right and will instead offer you the option of paying one of our officers to (fail to) protect you."

The deaths of those civilian victims is on the shooter and those who denied the victims the right to keep and bear arms.

Maybe because he was the first victim named? Now that the name of a second victim is known there are reports about her too.

Google his name, the media loves this guy and you won’t see the same attention paid to the others or even his partner security guard that died at the same time doing the same job.

This guy has a bio that makes him valuable, his name (Islam), he is Muslim, he is an immigrant, and he is a Muslim immigrant NYC cop.

Don’t forget that as a South Asian, he was a protected class “minority” and thus was hired by NYPD with preferences.

“Evidently full uniform with sidearm in holster, but he didn’t have time to draw it.”

Unfortunate.

I thought they were saying last night that it was a female NYPD officer who was killed. Shot in the head.

It was reported that the building security officer was hiding behind her desk as the shooting began in the main lobby. She did nothing to help the cop while he was confronting the killer.

"Legal or illegal? It makes a difference!"

It does make a different. I just did a search to see if you have to be a citizen to take the NYPD Police exam, and it says yes, you have to be a citizen, have a driver's license, along with other requirements. It looks like the NYPD isn't one of those law enforcement agencies that have allowed non-citizens to be among its ranks.
